Books and Journals:
Invitation to the Information Highway
Jaleh Mansouri, M.D.

As in years past, textbooks and scientific journals continue to be the mainstay of communicating new knowledge and research in pathology to pathologists and the medical community at large. The coming of the digital age and the Internet introduced the new venue of electronic publication for the dispersal of pathology knowledge and data. Most pathology texts and journals now have an electronic format in addition to the traditional hard copy versions (e.g. e-journals) that can be accessed at no additional cost (with purchase of the hard copy). Some medical libraries have converted their journal holdings completely to digital format. This trend has had a major impact on the accessibility of pathology information, the speed of scientific data reporting, and the business costs involved in publication.

Due to the breadth and speed at which new data in pathology is continuously generated, publishing firms have established websites featuring evidence-based reviews and summaries of current medical topics to guide pathologists and other physicians in navigating the vast information highway (e.g. Practical Reviews.com by Oakstone; UpToDate.com by Wolters Kluwer). Exclusive online publishing is governed by many of the same copyright laws that exist for books and journals, but readers may, in some instances, be able to play a more interactive role in the critical review process of the information presented.
