Clinical Analyzers and the Recycling of Laboratory Consumables
Jaleh Mansouri, M.D.

Pathology laboratory consumables include analytic reagents and plastic/glass materials such as pipettes, test tubes, and cuvettes. Certain replaceable parts such as rotors or cartridges found in laboratory instruments such as clinical laboratory analyzers are also considered consumable. Many of these items can be recycled and reused. Recycling consumables has become a major focus for pathology laboratories (e.g. CellNetix, Seattle, WA) in order to reduce overhead costs in the setting of automation and an ever-increasing volume of batched tests. Furthermore, recycling of disposables also benefits the environment at large by reducing pollution and waste.

Recycling materials consumables can be done either in house or by a commercial recycling company (e.g. Stericycle, Lake Forest, IL). If performing the recycling of an item in-house, a standard protocol or Standard Operating Procedures Manual (SOPs) should be in place to ensure proper execution of the task. Many cleaning/disinfecting substances are corrosive and may damage the plastic or metal part over time. This result may compromise the function of clinical lab analyzers and other instruments. Some manufacturers of laboratory instruments now offer services to periodically clean and maintain disposable parts belonging to their instruments. In addition, some companies (Mt. Baker Bio, WA) are employing innovative techniques to manufacture more eco-friendly consumables to facilitate the recycling process, since even recycled products are limited by a shelf-life.
