Forensic Photography: Getting the Best Shot

Modern techniques in digital photography have facilitated the use of
specialized photographic applications in forensic pathology. The need for
both capturing accurate details not visible to the naked eye and preserving
and archiving photographic images is shared by both forensic and anatomic
pathology. Advances in digital technology have enhanced the ability to
perform crime scene investigations, record and analyze trace evidence, and
present the findings in a visual medium to judge and jury. While the basic
premise of many forensic photography techniques is not new, digital
technology has markedly reduced costs and increased the speed and
efficiency in processing photographic images.
One application of photography that is extensively used in forensics is
alternative light source imaging. For example, the use of ultraviolet (UV) or
infrared radiation in UVIR photography can reveal hidden details about
injury patterns, tattoos for identification purposes, gunpowder residue, and
counterfeit money due to the biophysical properties of wavelengths in these
areas of the light spectrum. Monochrome cameras (Leica Biosystems®) can
optimally document latent fingerprints, footprints, and tire marks due to the
increased depth and texture characteristic of black and white images. In
addition, the unique tools of high-speed photography have revolutionized
ballistic investigations in forensics.
