Pathology Journals: The Study of Information
Jaleh Mansouri, M.D.
Journal publications are one of the main sources of information
regarding new developments in pathology. The number of pathology
journals available both reflects the growth of knowledge in this field and
represents a challenge for pathologists seeking to learn or to publish articles.
Selection criteria of the appropriate journal for publication include area of
expertise (e.g., neuropathology, molecular diagnostics) journal reputation
(both nationally and internationally), type of study design or format (e.g.,
case series, epidemiological study), and the primary language of publication
(most often English). Authors must also consider the overall quality of their
work and the probability of the article being accepted for publication in any
particular journal. Pathologists wishing to increase their knowledge often
use the same criteria for choosing which journals to read.
While most pathologists use practical means for selecting pathology
journals, bibliometric statistical methods are available for qualitative and
quantitative analysis of journals in pathology and many other scientific
disciplines. One metric often used in ranking journals is the impact factor.
The journal's impact factor is the number of citations the average article
receives in any given year. The role of the impact factor in journal
importance and selection is still a matter of debate.
