Openings for 2010

Position

Each year, two positions are available in this one-year program.  This fellowship is designed for the training of board-eligible candidates who desire to practice nephropathology.  This fellowship provides training for the interpretation of renal biopsies in all areas of Nephropathology, including native renal disease (adult and pediatric) and renal transplant pathology.  The fellows receive intensive training and supervision, learning to interpret renal disease utilizing light, immunofluorescence and electron microscopic techniques.  Gradually, they are given more responsibility, and ultimately function independently.

Fellows will have access to and participate in the evaluation of some 4,000 specimens per year collected by Nephropath.  Nephropath receives specimens from many nephrology groups across the United States and the Dominican Republic.  The large number of interesting cases and extensive database allow the Fellow the opportunity to pursue academic interests, if desired.  Time is available and protected for scholarly work.

Fellows will attend and participate in the daily morning nephropathology conferences.  They will also participate in monthly teaching conferences at Baptist and Arkansas Children’s Hospitals in Little Rock.  The opportunity to be considered for a staff position at Nephropath is available following successful completion of the Fellowship to those with desire and interest.

Requirements

Candidates must have completed three years of AP residency or four years of AP/CP training and be Board eligible in Pathology by starting date of the fellowship.

Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at Stanford University

Opening for July 2010

Program: The Stanford University School of Medicine offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship training program in Transfusion Medicine. The training is supported by a strong educational curriculum based in a tertiary care medical center composed of Stanford Hospital and Clinics and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital which together transfuse close to 80,000 blood components per year, and which components are almost entirely collected by the Stanford Blood Center. A dynamic interaction between both the hospital based transfusion service and the blood collection center constitutes the basis of the training program. The clinical training period is one year, in which fellows acquire expertise in immunohematology, blood collection and processing, stem cell collection and cellular therapies, consultative transfusion medicine, and therapeutic apheresis.

Requirements: Applicants should be Board-eligible/certified in pathology,
internal medicine, pediatrics or another appropriate specialty, and

Washington University School of Medicine

Hematopathology/Hematology Fellowship

Position open for 2011

Program(s): The hematopathology section of the Department of Pathology and Immunology, Washington University School of Medicine, announces an opening for a one- or two-year accredited fellowship starting July 1, 2011.  The first year will emphasize diagnostic hematopathology and laboratory hematology with training in peripheral blood smears, body fluid cytopathology, bone marrow and lymph node morphology, coagulation, flow cytometric immunophenotyping, immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnosis and cytogenetics.  Funding for an additional year is offered to highly qualified applicants to pursue in-depth research in a laboratory of their choice.

The large referral quaternary care and urban hospital system associated with Washington University in St. Louis provides a broad range of cases comprising >2400 marrows (cores and aspirates), >600 lymph nodes and other surgical specimens and >1200 consult cases per year.  These referral cases are largely generated by the Adult and Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant services that together perform approximately 300 transplants annually.  Due to the diversity of cases, the fellow will gain extensive diagnostic experience in the field of hematopathology, including uncommon disease entities, such as mature T-cell and NK-cell neoplasms and immunodeficiency associated lymphoproliferative disorders.

The fellow’s responsibilities are broad and at a level of training where an independent approach to case work-up is welcomed.  The fellow is regarded as the initial pathologist on all cases and will write pathology reports integrating morphologic description and all ancillary studies (molecular, cytogenetic and flow cytometric results).  The fellow is seen as the primary contact for referring pathologists and will be working closely with the clinical hematology/oncology faculty, gaining insights into the clinical management of patients.  The fellow will be presenting weekly at both the lymphoma and leukemia conferences.  Additionally, a monthly journal club aids in learning about new developments in this rapidly changing field.  During the first year the fellow will be expected to participate in hematopathology-related translational projects, for which funding is provided.  Furthermore, trainees with strong academic interests who are offered a 2-year fellowship will be able to choose among many outstanding research laboratories both within and outside the Department of Pathology and Immunology, and will be part of a stimulating and collegial research community with top-notch facilities and resources.

In summary, this program provides a strong basis for clinical practice including challenging cases in both adult and pediatric hematopathology, as well as opportunities for cutting-edge basic and translational research.  Upon completion of the program, the fellow will have the necessary skills and experience to successfully pursue a clinical and/or academic career in hematopathology.

Requirement(s): Applicants must be Board eligible or certified in anatomic and/or clinical pathology.  To apply, please submit all materials by either email or hard copy.  Required materials are:

Position open for 2010

The Neuropathology Division at Washington University has a longstanding program dedicated to providing excellence in clinical service, research, and teaching.  The fellowship position is one of the few in the country to consistently fill and it has been accredited for over 25 years.  Our faculty includes nationally and internationally recognized experts with a wide range of both clinical and basic research interests, particularly neoplastic, neurodegenerative, peripheral nerve, and muscle neuropathology.  The goal of the neuropathology training program is to prepare our fellows for all aspects of a highly successful career in academic neuropathology.  One new fellow is accepted into the program each year.

At least two years of prior postgraduate training are required.  Preference is given to individuals with two years of anatomic pathology training.  The program requires a two-year commitment.  During the first year, concentration is directed to the diagnostic aspects of neuropathology.  In this period, the fellow gains familiarity with both common and rare neuropathological diseases, morphologic diagnosis, and ancillary techniques, such as immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular diagnostics.  Approximately 2000 specimens come through the clinical service each year, including autopsy, surgical, and consultation material.

The second year is primarily for research. A wide spectrum of both clinical and neuroscience research opportunities exist within the division and the medical school environment.  The second year offers the individual a chance to begin or expand upon a specific area of investigation with the aim of developing a viable, ongoing research program.  Some fellows have extended their time in the lab and the program can be tailored to individual needs depending on the candidate’s long-term career goals, availability of an appropriate mentor, and funding.  Prior fellows from Washington University have uniformly passed their Neuropathology Boards, secured desirable faculty positions, and pursued successful careers.
