Position open for 2011
The Neuropathology Division at Washington University has a longstanding program dedicated to providing excellence in clinical service, research, and teaching. The fellowship position is one of the few in the country to consistently fill and it has been accredited for over 25 years. Our
faculty includes nationally and internationally recognized experts with a wide range of both clinical and basic research interests, particularly neoplastic, neurodegenerative, peripheral nerve, and muscle neuropathology. The goal of the neuropathology training program is to prepare our fellows for all aspects of a highly successful career in academic neuropathology. One new
fellow is accepted into the program each year.
At least two years of prior postgraduate training are required. Preference is given to individuals with two years of anatomic pathology training. The program requires a two-year commitment. During the first year, concentration is directed to the diagnostic aspects of neuropathology. In this period, the fellow gains familiarity with both common and rare neuropathological diseases, morphologic diagnosis, and ancillary techniques, such as immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular diagnostics. Approximately 1500 specimens come through the clinical service each year, including autopsy, surgical, and consultation material.
The second year is primarily for research. A wide spectrum of both clinical and neuroscience research opportunities exist within the division and the medical school environment. The second year offers the individual a chance to begin or expand upon a specific area of investigation with the aim of developing a viable, ongoing research program. Some fellows have extended their time
in the lab and the program can be tailored to individual needs depending on the candidate’s long-term career goals, availability of an appropriate mentor, and funding. New York, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center-Molecular Genetic

Openings for July 2011
The MSKCC Molecular Diagnostics Fellowship has an opening for July 2011. This is a 12-month fellowship for M.D. pathology trainees, now accredited by the ACGME, focusing on the application of molecular diagnostic techniques to the diagnosis of cancer, inherited disorders, and infectious diseases.
There are two areas of emphasis, the development of new diagnostic assays and research in cancer-related molecular diagnostics. The program is designed for the education of two fellows per year. Fellows will gain exceptional training in cancer-related somatic and germline genetic testing. Although the patient population reflects that of a comprehensive adult and pediatric cancer center, the volume and variety of molecular testing for somatic and inherited genetic alterations and infectious diseases provides ample material to become competent in all types of molecular genetic pathology testing. In addition, a very active clinical load in molecular monitoring of bone marrow transplant engraftment provides exposure to key aspects of identity testing.
The fellows participate in daily diagnostic activities, review the clinical histories, pathology reports (and slides, if indicated), and prior molecular genetic results, and assist in the case sign out under the supervision of the Attendings. They develop research projects in applied cancer-related molecular diagnostics and help in the set up and validation of new assays, both of which provide opportunities for subsequent publication.

Both ThinPrep and Surepath technologies are utilized in the laboratory. In addition the laboratory directs a pathology-based FNA Service with cytopathologist-staffed clinics and performs or assists with the vast majority of superficial and deep fine needle aspirations (approximately 1,200). Ancillary techniques such as immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics and electron microscopy are available for more comprehensive evaluation of difficult cases. In addition, the Cytopathology Laboratory is closely associated with the Program of Cytotechnology – with access to extensive teaching collections.
The fellowship offers opportunities for teaching cytotechnology students, residents and medical students as well as the opportunity to investigate any one of a number of research projects during the year. Diagnostic, research and teaching skills are emphasized in this academic environment.

The Department of Pathology offers a training program in surgical pathology with special emphasis
on the pathology of neoplastic diseases.
About the Program
This fellowship program meets the requirements for the fifth year of training in pathology. A large volume of material provides an unusual opportunity for in-depth experience and
the development of proficiency in the diagnosis of neoplastic diseases. In
addition to all subspecialties of surgical pathology and autopsy services,
rotations are available in electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, flow
cytometry, molecular diagnostic and various research laboratories.
All fellows are required to conduct an investigative study under the supervision of staff pathologists. An elective period is also provided. Participation in intra- and
interdepartmental conferences is emphasized. Because of the specialized and
demanding nature of the material encountered, the program is best suited for
the individual who has already obtained a good background in general anatomic
pathology.
Requirements
Candidates must be board certified or eligible for certification in anatomic pathology or AP/CP.
Stipends
Commensurate with the candidate's level of training.

Openings for 2011 and 2013
The Division of Neuropathology at the University of Virginia Health System has 2 fellowship positions for 2011, and 2 fellowship positions for 2013 in their ACGME accredited two year fellowship program.
Faculty members: M. Beatriz S. Lopes, M.D. (Program Director); James W. Mandell, M.D., Ph.D., Isa M. Hussaini, Ph.D., Bradley M. Miller, M.D., Ph.D, T. David Bourne, M.D.
The overall goal of the Neuropathology Program is to provide a flexible, full-time educational program in both diagnostic and experimental neuropathology. The Program encompasses the varied aspects of modern neuropathology, with an emphasis on academic neuropathology. The training program is configured in a two-year format, but a three-year program is provided for trainees who especially desire additional training in advanced diagnostic and/or research techniques. It is the intent and expectation of the program that all trainees will successfully pursue American Board of Pathology examination in Neuropathology.
The Neuropathology Division is composed of two full-time neuropathologists, one full-time research investigator, one research instructor, and one neuropathology instructor. The variety of pathologic entities seen at the University of Virginia are extensive and include the areas of neuro-oncology, pituitary pathology, neurodegenerative disorders, infections, metabolic, cerebrovascular, and immunological CNS diseases, and neuromuscular pathology. This reflects the tertiary nature of the UVA Medical Center and the activity and quality of the Neurology and Neurosurgery services. In addition, materials are examined from in-house and external consultations referred by the Neuro-Oncology Center. Strong emphasis is placed on the application of special histochemical stains, immunohistochemistry, and in-situ hybridization in the comprehensive evaluation of tumor specimens.
Applicants must have an MD degree (or foreign equivalent with current ECFMG certification) and be board eligible or certified in anatomic pathology.
Interested applicants should send a completed Universal Application Form, full and current curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, USMLE board scores, proof of licensure (either full or partial) and a personal statement to:
