Background

Orchard® Pathology®, developed in 2005 and released to the marketplace in 2006, is a complete diagnostic information system designed to accommodate the comprehensive pathology laboratory and the future trends in diagnostics, informatics, and EMR integration.

Orchard® Pathology is an all-inclusive CP/AP diagnostic information system designed to accommodate the complex workflow and reporting of clinical, cytology, anatomic, and molecular testing.  Orchard Pathology is used for AP only or as a single system that includes clinical and molecular—no more need for two separate systems.  The shared database provides access to the patient’s history and enables the consolidation of clinical results to the cytology or pathology report. Image management tools make it easy to link digital images, annotated diagrams, and scanned documents to case worksheets and incorporate them onto patient reports.

Orchard Pathology uses a customizable worksheet with established templates, protocols, and diagnoses for standardization and synoptic reporting. Pathologists can easily create ad-hoc reports without special computer programming skills. Unlike older text-based AP legacy systems that do not utilize pathology-specific word processing, Orchard Pathology stores report information in structured data fields that enhance EMR integration and simplify the process to mine data for evaluations, correlation studies, quality assurance, regulatory, statistical, and many other management reports.

Cytopathology, Dermatopathology, and Autopsy – features

Orchard Pathology has been designed and developed as a complete and comprehensive pathology system and is offered and sold as a complete system for today’s integrated pathology laboratory.  Orchard does not “modulize” the specific features supporting each of the various anatomic pathology departments.  They are already included in the system.

As an example, the system includes easy review/pathologist sign out of cytotechnologist findings.  The integrated database allows clinical, molecular, and pathology results to be consolidated onto the pathology worksheet to create hybrid reports.  Orchard Pathology is able to interface to the various instrumentation found in clinical/cytology/molecular testing.

For dermatopathology Orchard’s codified, synoptic text makes report generation easy.  For dermatopathologists who have their own unique needs, Orchard Pathology can accommodate specialized processes within the broader full-service pathology setup.

For autopsies, provisional/final reports can be configured as part of the whole system and images and diagrams can be easily included.

Case Management

Orchard Pathology is designed to simplify case management by employing a worksheet window that can be configured for use with the laboratory’s established templates, protocols, and diagnoses.  The worksheet is very flexible, allowing the pathologist to add observations by free text, text shortcuts, drop-down menus, voice recognition software, or formatted templates.  These features provide the tools for diagnosis standardization and synoptic reporting.

Batch to Real-time Processing

Requirements to improve and streamline the workflow of processing and reporting are increasing. Orchard’s ability to interface pathology instrumentation for positive sample identification reduces errors and allows the pathology laboratory to move away from the inefficiencies associated with batch processing. Bar coding of specimens, tissue cassettes, and slides allow pathologists and technicians to move cases confidently through the analytical process with greater speed and accuracy.

Result Evaluation

Rules-based decision support is available throughout Orchard Pathology, and result evaluation rules for reflex testing can be configured to individual workflow scenarios.  As an example, send-out tests, correlations, quality assurance protocols, and confirmatory testing can be automatically reflex-ordered according to verbiage in the report text.  The rule triggers the protocol, provides internal and/or reportable documentation, and automatically adds charges for billable procedures.

Electronic Signature

Orchard Pathology employs multi-level sign-out procedures, allowing you to forward cases for electronic review and final approval.

Image Capture

Link digital images and scanned consultation documents to case worksheets. Powerful annotation tools allow you to customize photomicrographs or diagrams and include all linked images on the patient report.

Patient Lookups

Easily look up all historical clinical, pathology, and molecular reports in a single patient file quickly and easily using a variety of search criteria.

Voice Recognition

Dictate and transcribe pathology findings quickly and efficiently using voice recognition tools.  Orchard Pathology has the ability to interface with a variety of voice recognition software packages.

Internet Reporting

Orchard’s internet portal allows real-time web delivery of patient reports in PDF format making results delivery instantaneous.

Structured and Discrete Data Fields for Data Mining & Management Reports

Pathologists can easily create ad-hoc reports without special computer programming skills. Unlike older legacy systems that do not utilize pathology specific word processing, Orchard Pathology stores report information in structured data fields that enhance EMR integration and simplify the process to mine data for evaluations, correlation studies, quality assurance, regulatory, statistical, and many other management reports.  With the system’s powerful data-mining browsers, pathologists can perform searches and build reports by specimen, diagnosis, test result, or case number, and then print the completed reports as needed or schedule the reports to print automatically at a more convenient time.

Billing

Orchard’s system automatically screens for payable diagnosis codes at order entry and assigns the appropriate modifiers when needed. Rules-based technology determines whether to add or suppress billing/CPT codes or modifiers to reflect the testing performed, and then automatically drops the billing record into the patient’s account. Using a billing interface, your billing department will no longer be required to hand-key laboratory charges.
