Definition / general
  • Rare epithelial malignancy of the anus with areas morphologically resembling sarcoma
Terminology

Epidemiology
  • Extremely rare in the anus, as in the colon
Case reports
Treatment
  • Surgery
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Carcinoma with a well differentiated component (such as squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma) and a poorly differentiated component that resembles sarcoma (ie, spindle cell morphology) but demonstrates epithelial characteristics by immunohistochemistry or electron microscopy

Differential diagnosis
  • Carcinosarcoma: biphasic tumor with an epithelial component and a truly mesenchymal component
