● Infection with Epstein-Barr virus; associated with marked lymphoid hyperplasia in appendix accompanied by small lymphoid cells and immunoblasts resembling Reed-Sternberg cells (Arch Pathol Lab Med 1993;117:269, Arch Pathol Lab Med 1985;109:680)
● Usually self limited, but may cause death
