  • Benign (grade I)
  • Arises within nerves and infiltrates them
  • Having multiple tumors or plexiform subtype is associated with neurofibromatosis 1

Gross description
  • Fusiform enlargement of nerve from which it arises
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Spindled Schwann cells with wire like collagen fibrils mixing with axons, stromal mucosubstances, mast cells, Wagner-Meissner corpuscles and fibroblasts
  • No Antoni A or B areas; vessels are thin walled without perivascular hemosiderin
