Definition / general
- Location of the mesenchymal tumor within the colonic wall helps shape the differential diagnosis (Mod Pathol 2015;28 Suppl 1:S47)
- Slightly uncommon in the colonic mucosa; most common lesions include leiomyoma, perineurioma, Schwann cell hamartoma and lipoma
- Mural lesions are less frequently encountered; rectal gastrointestinal stromal tumor is probably the most common
- Any rare mesenchymal/soft tissue tumor could theoretically arise in the colon or mesentery
Positive stains
- Consider staining stromal tumors with CD117 when diagnosis is not absolutely certain on H&E, as gastrointestinal stromal tumors can mimic other stromal tumors and have particular therapeutic options
Molecular / cytogenetics description
- Mesenchymal lesions often have identifiable molecular abnormalities (Patholog Res Int 2011;2011:952569)
