Definition / general
- Rare form of colonic adenocarcinoma, not officially recognized by WHO classification
- Distinct from "micropapillary carcinoma," a WHO recognized subtype with a poor prognosis
Epidemiology
- Up to 7% incidence but there are definitional differences in studies (Zhonghua Nei Ke Za Zhi 2006;45:9)
Case reports
- 59 year old woman with papillary adenocarcinoma of sigmoid colon (Jpn J Clin Oncol 1997;27:193)
- 71 year old man with papillary and mucoid adenocarcinomas occurring synchronously in colon (Histopathology 1979;3:489)
Gross description
- May exist within a polyp or be ulcerated

Microscopic (histologic) description
- Invasive adenocarcinoma with predominant papillary architecture
- May have psammoma bodies and hyaline globules (Jpn J Clin Oncol 1997;27:193) or be rich in Paneth cells (Histopathology 1979;3:489)
