Definition / general
  • Rarely occurs in middle ear
  • Due to inability of histiocytes to ingest bacteria such as E. coli with accumulation in phagolysosomes
Case reports
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Sheets of histiocytes with eosinophilic, granular to vacuolated cytoplasm (Hansemann cells), lymphocytes, plasma cells, neutrophils
  • Diagnostic feature is intracytoplasmic or extracellular calcospherites (Michaelis-Gutmann bodies)
