Definition / general
  • Causes a sudden, painless loss of vision
  • Retina is pale and white
  • May have edema and decreased vascularity
  • Fovea has cherry red spot due to ischemic white retina surrounding normal choroidal blood flow
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Usually emboli within central retinal artery
  • Early changes are ischemia of inner layers of retina
  • Late changes are atrophy of inner layers of retina and gliosis
