Definition / general
  • Associated with pulmonary infection in late stage AIDS with thoracic nodal involvement (Arch Pathol Lab Med 2003;127:554)
  • Gram stain: long, coarsely beaded, with frequently folded ends; often within histiocytes
Diagnosis
  • Culture is slow
  • Often coinfection with several species, including M. avium intracellulare complex

  • Granulomas with granular eosinophilic necrosis, neutrophilic abscesses, spindle cell proliferations
