- Recognize that metastases represent the most common pathologic process diagnosed in the mediastinum by FNA biopsy
- Become familiar with the most common primary tumor sites which may metastasize to the mediastinum, leading to FNA biopsy
- Recognize the importance of obtaining adequate tumor cellularity for cell block preparations when special stains are anticipated in the case of metastatic lesions
- Become familiar with immunohistochemical staining panels which may be of use in identifying the primary tumor subtype, regardless of the presence or absence of pertinent clinical history
