Definition / general
  • Similar to aneurysmal bone cyst
  • Rarely occurs after dental extraction
  • 15 - 26% recur
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Spindled, ovoid or round histiocytes-like cells in well vascularized fibrous stroma
  • Cells have 1 - 3 nuclei and may form giant cells with 10 - 20 nuclei that aggregate in groups of 6 - 12 cells
  • Giant cells tend to invade and line vascular channels
  • Lesions contain metaplastic woven bone and lamellar bone lined by osteoblasts and occasionally osteoclasts
  • Prominent extravasation of blood, numerous mitotic figures
