Definition / general
  • Also called pseudocyst
  • Complication of chronic sinusitis due to outflow obstruction
  • May destroy contiguous bones and resemble a neoplasm
  • 2/3 in frontal sinus; also anterior ethmoid sinus
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Inflammatory cells and mucin lift epithelium of sinus and periosteum away from underlying bone
  • Epithelium may undergo squamous metaplasia
  • Extravasation of mucin into lamina propria with muciphages
