Definition / general
  • Develops on sun exposed skin, usually upper face and forehead but also lip
  • Low potential for metastases (0.1%) but can kill by direct invasion if untreated
  • Frequently appears to disappear
  • High risk: fair skin, sun exposure, older adults and males
  • Excision
Gross description
  • Elevated area with ulceration, crusting
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Nests of cells with clefting from overlying surface epithelium
  • Cells have pallisading nuclei, minimal pleomorphism
