Definition / general
  • 2 - 10% of intraoral carcinomas
  • Associated with chewing tobacco or oral snuff dipping; men or women
  • Often verrucous subtypes
  • May involve adjacent muscles, skin or bone
  • May have late metastases to submandibular nodes
  • 5 year survival - anterior buccal mucosa: 40%; middle buccal mucosa: 17%; posterior buccal mucosa: 10%
Prognostic factors
  • Site (above), depth of invasion (best if < 3 mm), tumor thickness (best if < 6 mm)
