Definition / general
  • Unusual variant of epithelial mesothelioma (JDMS 2013;6:1)
  • Occurs mainly in the peritoneum
  • Tumors of < 2 cm are considered benign while larger tumors are more likely to disseminate (J Gynecol Surg. 2013;29:59)
  • Peritoneum, pericardium, and tunica vaginalis
Clinical features
  • Adominal mass, pain
  • Ultrasonography shows an ovarian mass

  • Salpingo-oophorectomy
  • Yellowish firm, multinodular ovarian mass

  • Yellowish firm, multinodular ovarian mass
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Thin fibrovascular papillae lined by relatively uniform cuboidal mesothelial cells
  • Psammoma bodies are occasionally encountered

Differential diagnosis
  • Diffuse malignant mesothelioma (DMM): cytological atypia, abnormal mitoses and bizarre cells
  • Reactive mesothelial hyperplasia
  • Serous papillary adenocarcinoma: CEA positive
