Definition / general
  • Can be primary or metastatic
  • Primary ovarian paragangliomas are very rare
  • Commonly present with hypertension
  • Potentially aggressive tumors
Clinical features
  • Abdominal discomfort, adnexal mass or hypertension
  • Potentially aggressive - 1 case had extraovarian disease at surgery

  • USG: solid cytic ovarian mass

Gross description
  • Large solid mass (8-22 cm) with tan yellow to brown cut surface
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Well circumscribed but unencapsulated
  • Closely packed nests of tumor cells in zellballen pattern
  • Polygonal cells with abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm and speckled chromatin
  • Mitotic activity is low (0-2/10 hpf)
