Essential features
  • Elevation of serum alpha feto-protein; this marker is also used as an immunostain for the tumor

Treatment
  • Yolk sac tumor generally responds to chemotherapy, not radiotherapy
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Tumor shows about a dozen different patterns of solid, microcystic and glandular structures of large polygonal hyperchromatic, pleomorphic cells
Positive stains
  • In addition to alpha feto-protein, Glypican 3 has lately been recognized as a better, artifact free marker for this tumor
  • Tumor is positive for a wide spectrum of cytokeratins
