Definition / general
  • Associated with Waldenström macroglobulinemia with bone marrow involvement, although IgM paraprotein not required for diagnosis of lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma
  • May be associated with hepatitis C in some patients
  • Postulated normal counterpart is postgerminal B cell destined for plasma cell differentiation
  • WHO definition:
    • Morphology below without features of other lymphoma types
    • May have plasmacytic differentiation
    • Serum IgM monoclonal protein present, monotypic B cell tumor negative for CD5, CD10, CD23
Case reports
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Red and white pulp involvement by small lymphocytes, plasmacytoid lymphocytes, plasma cells
  • Many cells have Russell bodies (intracytoplasmic inclusions) and Dutcher bodies (intranuclear inclusions)
  • May have prominent epithelioid histiocytes
  • No proliferation centers

  • CD19, CD20, CD22, CD79a, cytoplasmic immunoglobulins such as IgM (plasmacytic cells)
