Definition / general
  • Autoimmune thyroiditis occurring within one year after delivery
  • Painless enlargement of thyroid, transient thyrotoxicosis, low radioactive iodine uptake, late hypothyroid phase
  • Resembles chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis with increase in B cells and decrease in suppressor T cells

  • May have antimicrosomal (antithyroid peroxidase) antibodies
Gross description
  • Mild enlargement, no nodules
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Lymphocytic infiltration with variable disruption of thyroid glands
