24 February 2009

Greetings:

This is our monthly email highlighting changes to PathologyOutlines.com.  The last email was sent in January 2009.

Advertisers: We welcome these new and renewing business advertisers of products and services: Bioimagene (total imaging solutions).

Recent monthly website news emails:

January 2009, October 2008, June 2008

Books: We list all new books of interest to Pathologists and Laboratory personnel, sorted by specialty, author and New Books.  To receive a monthly email listing new books added to our Books pages, email NatPernick@Hotmail.com with “subscribe to new books email” in the subject line.  There is no charge.  We will be adding more new books in the next week.

Buyer’s Guide:  This page lists all of our corporate advertisers in alphabetical order and sorted by category of products or services.  If one of your pathology / laboratory vendors is NOT listed, suggest to their sales representative that they advertise with us.  It’s an easy way to help our website.

Case of the week:  We recently posted and emailed Case #139.  We typically post 3 cases per month.  To receive these cases by email, email NatPernick@Hotmail.com with “subscribe to COW” in the subject line.  There is no charge.  Cases are also listed on the Case of the Week page by number, with and without diagnosis, and by category (dermatopathology, hematopathology, etc).  We also accept new cases, although we have enough cases for the next 9-10 months.

Contests:  Congratulations to Dr. Marilin Rosa, Jacksonville, Florida and Dr. Angel Fernandez-Flores, Ponferrada, Spain for winning our Amazon.com drawing.  Each received a check for $50 for purchasing items through our website from Amazon.  Dr. Fernandez-Flores donated her winnings to our charity, The Detroit College Promise.  Congratulations also to Dr. Andrea L. Weins, Ball Memorial Hospital, Indiana, for winning our drawing for first year residents who signed up for our New Books email.  She also received a check for $50.

We have a new Contest / drawing.  Please complete our short survey (click here) by 30 April 2009, and be sure to provide your email address.  We will draw one name at random, and pay the winner $50 (US dollars) by check or PayPal.  You must be affiliated with a pathology group, training program or laboratory to be eligible.

Contribute: Click on our Contribute button (left side of Home Page) to learn how you can help improve our website for the pathology community worldwide by contributing images, videos or comments or by authoring new chapters or sections.

Detroit College Promise: Our new charity currently has 130 eligible scholarship recipients at Cody High School in Detroit, making it one of the largest private scholarships for Detroit students.  The Detroit College Promise is now a tax exempt, 501(c)(3) public charity.  Click here to contribute or visit our website at www.DetroitCollegePromise.org.

Emails: We have 7 email lists - Case of the Week (weekly, about 36 weeks per year), Jobs for Pathologists/PhDs (biweekly), Other laboratory Jobs (biweekly), New Fellowships (biweekly), New Books (monthly), Website news (monthly) and Detroit College Promise news (monthly).  To subscribe, email NatPernick@Hotmail.com and indicate which email list you want to subscribe to.  There is no charge.  All of our email lists are private and are not shared, sold or used for any other purpose.  Click on the Email updates button (left side of Home Page) for more information.

Exhibits:  We will be at booth #711 at USCAP in Boston on March 9-11 (Dr. Pernick will be at the booth only the first 2 days).  Stop by and say hello, and let us know your thoughts on how we can make our website more useful to you.  We recently exhibited at the Michigan Society of Dermatology conference in Troy (for DermatologyOutlines.com).

Images: We are behind on adding images, but just added a new staff person to assist with the textbook portions of our website, including images.

We invite you to contribute gross, microscopic, special stains or other images, particularly of uncommon entities.  We will post them in the appropriate chapter of our online textbook, so pathologists and related personnel throughout the world can benefit from them.  We will list your name as a contributor in the chapter, and in this monthly email, unless you want to remain anonymous.  For more information, click here.

Improvements:  As we update chapters, we are adding more text, images and references.  We are including the WHO classification, and images from the AFIP fascicle third series.  We are also changing the links to pictures and references so they will open a new window.  We are also adding more Home Page links.

Link checking:  We link check each chapter at least every 3 months, and other pages more frequently.  However, some good websites go down from time to time, or change the links in a way our link checker program cannot detect.  Let us know if your spot a bad link, and we’ll check it out.

New Products and Services page:  We continue to add announcements on a regular basis.  Click on the New Products button (left side of the Home Page) to access this page.

Sister website: Tell your dermatology colleagues about our sister website, www.DermatologyOutlines.com

Textbook: We have completed our update of the Ovary-nontumor chapter, which has 46 topics, 200 images (many from the AFIP fascicle, 3rd series) and 250 references.  We have also added a section on FISH to the Molecular Pathology chapter, written by Dr. Rodney E. Shackelford of Johns Hopkins.  We are finishing up an update of the Thyroid chapter.  With new staff, we hope to update chapters more frequently.

We have added a Product Placement advertising feature. For antibodies, stains or molecular markers, at the end of the text for that marker you may see, "Sources for testing (advertisements): company name". This is a link to an advertisement for this product. This feature was requested by pathologists, who want to know how to purchase specific products, and the advertising revenue helps support our free website.

Our website is under continuous improvement and is updated daily.  Please email me at NatPernick@hotmail.com if you see a possible error or have a comment.  I personally respond to each email, usually within one business day.
