Improvements:  Recent improvements to our online textbook include:

(1) Making each topic a separate page, with thumbnails of images and better formatting to improve readability.  We have made these changes for the Soft Tissue Chapter - Fibrohistiocytic and Adipose Tumors (click here), and will make them on future chapters as they are added or updated.

(2) Better formatting of the Home Page, with two columns of chapters to reduce scrolling

(3) Adding an Index to each chapter

(4) Including more content in the differential diagnoses of each topic.

Advertisers: We thank these renewing business advertisers: Biocare Medical (immunohistochemical and histopathology products, monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies, and automated staining equipment), Ventana Medical (developers and manufacturers of medical diagnostic instrument and reagent systems).

Recent monthly website news emails:

May 2009, Feb 2009, Jan 2009, Oct 2008, Jun 2008

Books: We list all new books (2003 to date) of interest to Pathologists and Laboratory personnel, sorted by specialty, author and New Books.  To receive a monthly email listing new books added to our Books pages, email NatPernick@Hotmail.com with “subscribe to path books email” in the subject line.  There is no charge.

Our sister website, DermatologyOutlines.com, has books on clinical Dermatology that are not related to Pathology, but may still be off interest to dermatopathologists.

Buyer’s Guide:  This page (click here) lists all of our corporate advertisers in alphabetical order and sorted by category of products or services.  If one of your pathology / laboratory vendors is NOT listed, suggest to their sales representative that they advertise with us.  It’s an easy way to help our website.

Case of the week:  We recently posted and emailed Case #150.  We typically post 3 cases per month.  To receive these cases by email, email NatPernick@Hotmail.com with “subscribe to COW” in the subject line.  There is no charge.  Cases are also listed on the Case of the Week page by number, with and without diagnosis, and by category (dermatopathology, hematopathology, etc).  We also accept new cases, although we have enough cases for the next 9-10 months.

Conference page: We redesigned this page so it loads faster.  This redesign also fixes the occasional problem of pictures not matching the ad.

Contests:  Congratulations to Dr. Roopa Paulose, Hatton Health, United Kingdom and Dr. Alireza Zarineh, Allegheny General Hospital, Pennsylvania (USA).  Both received a check for $50 for completing our survey and winning our drawing.  Thanks to all who completed the survey, which helps us improve our website.  We will announce a new contest in September 2009.

Emails: Our current email lists are:  Case of the Week (3 weeks/month), Jobs for Pathologists/PhDs (biweekly), Other laboratory Jobs (biweekly), New Fellowships (biweekly), New Books (monthly), Website news (monthly) and Detroit College Promise news (the scholarship we sponsor, monthly).  Our sister website, DermatologyOutlines.com, also has email lists for: Case of the Month, Dermatology Jobs, Dermatology Fellowships, Dermatology Books and Dermatology News.  To subscribe, email NatPernick@Hotmail.com and indicate which email list you want to subscribe to.  There is no charge.  All of our email lists are private and are not shared, sold or used for any other purpose.  Click on the Email updates button (left side of Home Page) for more information.

Exhibits: This fall, we will be attending conferences of the American Association of Pathology Assistants, CAP, ASCP and Wayne State University.  Stop by our booth and say hello, and let us know your thoughts on how we can make our website more useful to you.  We recently exhibited at USCAP and the Michigan Society of Pathologists.

Images: We invite you to contribute gross, microscopic, special stains or other images, particularly of uncommon entities.  We will post them in the appropriate chapter of our online textbook, so pathologists and related personnel throughout the world can benefit from them.  We will list your name as a contributor in the chapter, and in this monthly email, unless you want to remain anonymous.  For more information, click here.

Thanks to Angel Fernandez-Flores, MD, PhD, Hospital El Bierzo and Clinica Ponferrada, Spain, for contributing images of botryomycosis to the Skin-nontumor chapter and acquired digital fibrokeratoma to the Skin-nonmelanocytic tumor chapter.

Jobs page: We redesigned this page so it loads faster.  We are also working on more standardized formatting for this page.  We added a category - Buy/Sell pathology practices/labs.  Our first advertiser wants to buy practices or laboratories in any of five states.

Link checking:  We link check each chapter at least every 3 months, and other pages more frequently.  However, some good websites go down from time to time, or change the links in a way our link checker program cannot detect.  Let us know if you spot a bad link, and we’ll check it out.

Management page: This page (accessible from the center of the Home Page under Clinical Pathology topics) contains original articles added by advertisers.

New Products and Services page:  We continue to add announcements on a regular basis.  Click here or on the New Products button (left side of the Home Page) to access this page.

Product Placement: We have started to apply our new format to the Stains chapter, and have extensively updated the topics on BG-8 (useful for mesothelioma) and D2-40 (a marker of lymphatics).  For many stain topics, we now include a link to a company that supplies these markers (for example, Covance for these markers).

Sister website: Tell your dermatology colleagues about www.DermatologyOutlines.com

Textbook: Recent chapter updates include Soft Tissue Tumors-Fibrohistiocytic and Adipose Tissue Tumors (Part 2).  The updates include our new format with a separate page per topic, updated images and references, and thumbnails of many of the images.

Our website is under continuous improvement and is updated daily.  Please email me at NatPernick@hotmail.com if you see a possible error or have a comment.  I personally respond to each email, usually within one business day.
