Clinical Biochemist
BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA (CANADA).
LifeLabs BC is seeking a Clinical Biochemist to join our medical scientific staff. The practice covers all of BC with most of the work concentrated in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. The successful candidate will be based at our main testing facility in Burnaby. Occasional travel to other sites in BC may be required.
This position will be available in June 2022.
Responsibilities:
- Consult with physicians and other health care providers regarding appropriate selection and interpretation of laboratory tests for their patients.
- Interpret and report the results of selected chemistry tests, including serum and urine protein electrophoresis, endocrine assays, autoimmune testing, and toxicology.
- Provide leadership in the evaluation, implementation, and support of new technologies.
- Act as an internal resource for medical scientific, technologist and support staff.
- Collaborate with medical, operational, and regulatory affairs staff to support quality improvement and maintain accreditation standards.
- Work closely with external partners, such as health authorities and the Provincial Laboratory Medicine Service, to ensure quality of service within the larger health landscape of BC.
- Participate in academic and/or administrative committees, where appropriate.
Qualifications and Skills:
- PhD with certification (or eligible for certification) in Clinical Biochemistry from the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry. Candidates with equivalent training and certification will be considered.
- Prior experience in a multidisciplinary laboratory is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Common sense approach to problem solving.
- Leadership skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams.
- Project management capabilities would be an asset.

Anatomical Pathologist (300-0757)
CAMPBELL RIVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (CANADA).
The Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) Department of Laboratory and Medical Imaging is seeking applications for a full time Anatomical Pathologist. General Pathologists may also be considered for this opportunity; however, applicants should be aware all of the work will be in anatomical pathology.
While we are seeking anatomical pathologists who can provide broad coverage, extra training or interest in Dermatopathology or GI pathology is an asset. Based at the North Island Campbell River Hospital (CRG), you will work with a team in the hospital environment, sharing knowledge and collaborating to ensure seamless pathology services within the community and within the Department of Laboratory Medicine as a whole. You will be a member of the Department of Laboratory and Medical Imaging and report to the Department Head Laboratory Medicine and the Division Head Anatomical Pathology.
A typical week for a physician would include providing the following direct services:
- Surgical Pathology (including Frozen Sections/Intraoperative Consultations), Cytology, and hospital autopsy services.
- Grossing of all Level 3 surgical specimens and working with and providing oversight and guidance, within the terms of the contract, to operational staff grossing Levels 1 & 2.
The North Island Campbell River Hospital, a 95-bed facility which opened in October 2017, is a regional referral centre for a population of approximately 40,000. In addition to Laboratory services, the hospital has a broad range of consultants including Internal Medicine, Intensive Care, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Otolaryngology, Radiology and Family Medicine.
All applicants must have a Fellowship in Anatomic Pathology or General Pathology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or its equivalent) and must obtain full licensure in the province of British Columbia, as well as CMPA coverage. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at BC Cancer is seeking an experienced lymphoma pathologist with expertise in diagnostic lymphoma pathology and related translational/basic research in order to further support BC Cancer’s mandate.
Priority will be given to applicants with specific lymphoma or hematopathology fellowship training and experience at a major academic cancer centre in the area of lymphoma pathology.
The applicant should also have a demonstrable record in research involving lymphoid cancers with a desire to collaborate with other researchers in the Centre for Lymphoid Cancer and the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre. Collaborative research with basic scientists, oncologists, and industry is well established at BC Cancer and all members of our medical staff are encouraged to pursue clinical, translational, or fundamental research related to cancer in addition to their service work.
The individual selected is expected to participate in teaching of postgraduate trainees and undergraduate medical students. The successful candidate will be recommended for an appointment within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia.
Participation in departmental quality programs, including quality assurance and quality improvement programs is mandatory.
