Quarter 1 - 2018 totals

For this quarter, there were 218 job postings at PathologyOutlines.com for full time or part time pathologists, which form the basis for the statistics below. This is a 49.3% increase from the 146 job postings in the first quarter of 2017. We have excluded postings that were only for locum, Ph.D., residency, fellowship or non-pathologist positions. Of the 218 postings, 206 were for 1 position, 4 were for 2 positions, 2 were for 3 positions and 6 were for an unspecified number of positions greater than 1.

Of the 218 ads, 91 (42%) were for academic positions, and 127 (58%) were for non-academic positions. We saw a decrease in academic positions compared with the first quarter in 2017 (53% academic, 47% nonacademic). We define academic as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor position at a University.

Jobs were posted from 39 of 50 states and Puerto Rico, plus the Northeast and Midwest areas, Canada (5 provinces) and Saudia Arabia. California had 17 ads, Pennsylvania had 15 ads, and both Illinois and New York had 14 ads.

Totals by region increased noticeably in the Midwest (21.9% to 28.0%) and West ( 8.9% to 17.4%), compared with the 1st quarter of 2017. There was a decrease in the percentage of job ads from the Northeast (29.5% to 25.2%) and South (30.8% to 22.5%).

82.6% of postings required AP or AP/CP board certification / eligibility (BC/BE), a slight increase from the 80% figure for the first quarter of 2017. 36.2% required AP/CP boards and 9.2% of postings required CP board certification only. Thirteen postings did not specify board certification.

199 (91.3%) of job postings required fellowship training or strong subspecialty experience. For this period, the most common subspecialties / job descriptions listed were Cytopathology, Hematopathology and GI, as indicated below. For the statistics below, we tried to determine from the text of the ads what fellowship training was essential for a Pathologist, or what the type of position was.

Length of postings:
We remove job ads when (a) the advertisers contact us and request removal, (b) after we contact the advertisers (beginning 3 - 4 months after posting) and they request removal, or (c) the ads expire at 6 months. The data below is for the period April 1, 2017 to September 30, 2017 to ensure that 6 months has elapsed since the job ad was posted.

For this period, there were 325 job ads, including 76 in which the advertisers requested removal before the 6 month period expired. This includes 28 academic jobs, with an average of 115 days posting per job (range, 4-186 days) and 48 nonacademic jobs, with an average of 108 days posting per job (range, 4-185 days). There were 249 job ads which ran until expiration, including 144 academic and 105 nonacademic ads.
