Definition / general
  • Uncommon
  • Usually supratentorial
  • Age 3 - 31 years in one study (Am J Surg Pathol 1997;21:820)
  • Overall survival of 75% at 5 years
  • May have extraneural metastases and early recurrence

Gross description
  • Well demarcated, deeply situated masses
  • May be dark red or resemble cyst with mural nodule, may be away from ventricle
Microscopic (histologic) description
  • Noninfiltrative growth, tumor cells have rounded nuclei with perinuclear clear halos and focal perivascular pseudorosettes
  • Large clefted and grooved nuclei
  • May have anaplastic features

Electron microscopy description
  • Features of ependymoma
  • EM recommended for diagnosis of this variant - shows complex intercellular junctions, surface microvilli, cilia and microrosettes; no secretory granules, no vesicles, no synapses
Molecular / cytogenetics description
  • No deletions of 1p, 19q or NF2
