Definition / general
- Transmitted by Stegomyia aegypti (formerly Aedes aegypti) mosquito (Wikipedia: Aedes aegypti Biting Human [Image])
- Causes bone marrow suppression, DIC and thrombopathy (Baillieres Best Pract Res Clin Haematol 2000;13:261)
- Also known as "breakbone" fever
Clinical presentation and diagnosis
- Characteristic skin rash similar to measles
- Fever, headache, muscle and joint pain
- Rarely presents with life threatening hemorrhagic fever
- Leukopenia, lymphocytosis with atypical lymphocytes in peripheral blood
- Confirmation by serology or PCR

- Patient with hemoglobin H disease and acute myeloid leukemia precipitated by dengue virus infection (Haematologica 2001;86:E17)
Treatment
- Usually supportive (oral rehydration, intravenous fluids, etc.)
Microscopic (histologic) description
- Bone marrow hypoplasia or hyperplasia
- Megakaryocytic hypoplasia with thrombocytopenia as the most common hematologic manifestation
- Occasional extreme plasmacytosis (Arch Pathol Lab Med 2003;127:1026)
- Hemophagocytosis and dysplastic changes (Kaohsiung J Med Sci 2005;21:34)
