Definition / general
- Due to controversy over the precise lineage of these tumors, they are termed fibrohistiocytic tumors (Fletcher: WHO Classification of Tumours of Soft Tissue and Bone, 4th Edition, 2013)
- Tumors previously called malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) are now called undifferentiated or unclassified sarcoma; based on cell morphology, they are subclassified as undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, undifferentiated spindle cell sarcoma, undifferentiated epithelioid cell sarcoma and undifferentiated round cell sarcoma
- Tumors currently within this category include tenosynovial giant cell tumor, deep fibrous histiocytoma, plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumor and giant cell tumor of soft tissue (WHO Classification of Tumours Editorial Board: Soft Tissue and Bone Tumours, 5th Edition, 2020)
