Definition / general
- Uncommon; only 8% of uterine leiomyomas occur in cervix
- Clinically may mimic an endocervical polyp
- Unusual finding in a pap smear, even if present in cervix
Case reports
- 54 year old woman with pedunculated leiomyoma (Gynecol Oncol 2005;97:253)
- Patient with large leiomyoma causing heavy hemorrhage (Clin Exp Obstet Gynecol 2003;30:144)
- Patient with benign cervical leiomyoma (Gynecol Oncol 1996;62:119)
Gross description
- Firm, whorled cut surface similar to uterine leiomyoma
- Usually 1 cm or less
Microscopic (histologic) description
- Resembles uterine leiomyoma
- Often prominent thick walled blood vessels
- May have mitotic figures below ulcerated areas
Cytology description
- Not identified in Pap smear unless a cervical leiomyoma is present which ulcerates (DeMay: The Pap Test: Exfoliative Gynecologic Cytology; 2005)
- Pap smear diagnosis is usually infectious or otherwise abnormal (J Med Assoc Thai 1991;74:471)
- Spindle cells with cigar shaped nuclei, bland chromatin
- Nuclear degeneration can occur
