- By definition, must be surrounded on all sides by gastric mucosa; otherwise may be esophageal carcinoma with gastric extension
- Usually have small glandular component if searched for
- Mucoepidermoid carcinoma: very rare
- Undifferentiated carcinoma: very rare
- Endodermal sinus tumor: very rare
- Embryonal carcinoma: very rare
